What is a Zumba class like?

It is a Latin and World Rhythms based class so many of the steps you will do are the merengue, cha-cha, salsa, and reggaeton. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of these dance styles. You will be able to pick up on them during any class. But if you do have a dance background, you will love Zumba all the more because it combines an activity you love with enough intensity to get a great workout. According to the Zumba website,

“We take the “work” out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party.”

Zumba classes are usually 60 minutes long. You’ll start with a slower warm-up song, dance your heart out, and then end with a slower cool-down song. But I have two left feet, I can’t do Zumba

Needing to have dance background to do Zumba is a myth. If you don’t have any dance background and have never taken a Zumba class, you may have moments in your first class when you feel a little lost. But like trying anything new, it just takes a little practice to catch on. The choreography and the songs are repetitive enough that if you don’t get it on the first time around, you will probably have it by the end of the song. And your instructors use the same choreography for several weeks at a time so after a few weeks you will really have the hang of it. Also, once you learn the basic Latin steps, those base steps will stay the same throughout any Zumba workout.

You can find a Zumba class in 180 countries, 15 million people do it, and 200,000 gyms and studios offer Zumba classes. When you get into Zumba, you are getting into a worldwide phenomenon. Part of its far reach is that Zumba isn’t centered on one culture. Zumba was created by a Colombian dancer, Alberto Perez. There is definitely a Latin emphasis, but also a reliance on World Rhythms which makes it more accessible to more people.
